Valentine from Vermont Mittens Free Crochet Pattern

I enjoyed making the Bernie Sanders inspired mittens so much that I thought how fun it would be to put a twist on them with LOVE and came up with these Valentine from Vermont Love Mittens Free Crochet Pattern.

You will note on the Valentine from Vermont Mittens Free Crochet Pattern that one hand has hearts facing one way and the other hand has hearts facing the other way. This is meant to illustrate that we are to always be BOTH giving and receiving love.

The Valentine from Vermont Mittens Free Crochet Pattern is worked in the round and features the waistcoat stitch. I chose the waistcoat stitch because it creates a snug and dense material which is great for mittens to help keep those hands warm.

Truly the Valentine from Vermont Mittens Free Crochet Pattern is also a GREAT stash-busting pattern and you can use any color combo that you like or have on hand that is category 4 weight yarn.

I used Red Heart Yarn from my stash. They have a wide variety of category 4 weight yarns that work great for this pattern.

You can also grab some category 4 weight yarn from Lion Brand here and Basic Stitch is ideal for the Valentine from Vermont Mittens Free Crochet Pattern.

PATTERN NOTES:

The cuff is worked in rows then joined together. Using your smaller hook.
You can use the larger hook for a slightly larger cuff.
The body of the mitten is worked in the round with joined rounds.

Each round of the body begins with a ch 1 and ends with a sl st.
Neither of these count as a โ€œstitchโ€ โ€“ they are merely for construction

You will keep the unused color as strands in the back (inside) the body of the mitten.

Gauge for this pattern is not essential. What matters most is a fabric that fits.
The best way to create bigger mittens is to go up a hook size.
I actually went up 2 hooks sizes from my initial attempt in this design until I got a fit I liked.

The Split Single Crochet /Waistcoat Stitch creates a thick, not very stretchy fabric. Perfect for mittens. But without much stretch, go up a hook size if you think it seems โ€œsmallโ€.

This is best worked using Intarsia Crochet and creating bobbins of your colors
