1724 South Side Chicago Crochet Shawl Free Pattern

Say hello to the 1724 South Side Crochet Shawl! This beauty is the newest crochet shawl pattern in my series of patterns for crocheters AND knitters. It was first featured in the 2022 Chicago Yarn Crawl and designed for Miss Purl Chicago.

With eyelet detail sprinkled throughout the 1724 South Side Crochet Shawl, you will have just enough interest to keep your attention but not too much you can’t relax and enjoy a good sip ‘n stitch with your friends. Categorized as Advanced Beginner, this easy crochet pattern will give beginner crocheters a little boost. More advanced makers will find a nice palate cleanser in this two-color shawl pattern.

Wait - How can a crochet pattern be for a knitter? When they are friends with a crocheter who wants them to shawl along with them! Our matching knitting and crochet shawl patterns are perfect for a group of crafters with varied preferences. Choose matching colors for a bestie vibe or complimentary colors to highlight each other’s tastes. (We wrote a whole post about Shawl-alongs because we love them so much! Find it here.)

I really love how the contrast banding highlights the eyelet panels and overall shape of the 1724 South Side Chicago Crochet Shawl. And symmetrical semi-circle shawls like this are so easy to wear and to style. Start with the center of the shawl in front of you, take the ends criss cross behind your neck and you’re done!

This shawl is a great size for wearing in place of a cowl or scarf under your coat in cooler temperatures or on its own in transition seasons. Keep it nearby for when the air conditioning is cranked up. It is an all-season wrap!

PATTERN NOTES:
There is no RS / WS for this shawl. It is fully reversible.

Do not worry about the edges because the actual border for the neck side will be straight after blocking. See blocking tips here.

You may see significant change in finished measurements after blocking so definitely do a gauge swatch and do not worry if it seems “smaller” while stitching.

Please see this video on Stitch & Hustle to learn the fhdc / fsc if you do not know it.

There will be a significant change to the shape of your shawl if you use a chain to start instead of fsc.

If you notice your fabric begin to “curl” up and round then you are likely doing your beginning ch 1 of each row to tightly In this case do a ch 2 instead to start each row and this still does not act as a stitch.

You will be increasing by 4 sts each row throughout the pattern.
