Meet the sister pattern to the Paint Drip Speckle Cowl with the same easy paint-drip transition technique, built specifically to showcase mini skeins in yoru stash. Six colors, one gorgeous stash-busting cowl, still zero fuss.

I used the GoSadi mini skein set from Asylum Fibers and the GoSadi Speckle as my main color.

If you've got a basket of mini skeins you keep "saving for the right project" then I promise you - this is the right project. The Paint Drip Cowl takes the same no-count, travel-friendly transition technique from the original Speckle Cowl and reworks it to spotlight six colors instead of four, making it the perfect home for those precious 50–100 yard mini skeins that are too special to use alone but never quite enough for a full project on their own.

Six colors, one project. Let's be honest — most of us have a bin (or three) of mini skeins we've been "saving." Saving for what, exactly? This pattern is the answer. It finally gives you a legitimate, satisfying reason to buy that mini skein bundle you've been eyeing, or to dig into the ones already sitting in your stash gathering dust. No more single-skein guilt purchases with no plan attached.

Uniform blocks. Every color gets the exact same 16-row treatment — no recalculating, no "wait, was this one supposed to be longer?" moments. Once you knit the first color block, you've knit them all. That means you can actually relax into this project instead of babysitting a spreadsheet of row counts. Cast on, settle in, repeat.

Same travel-friendly rhythm. The paint drip transitions aren't just decorative — they're functional. Every 16 rows, you hit a natural stopping point built right into the pattern. Materials

  • Yarn: DK weight - 6 coordinating mini skeins or leftover colors (Colors A–F) - this is the ideal project for showcasing yarn samples, mini skein clubs, or stash remnants
    I used:
    Color A Main Skein - 230 yards goSadi Speckle
    Color B - Skillet’s Dreamsicle Orange - 49 yards
    Color C - Groovy Cherry - 49 yards
    Color D - Pivotal Pink - 49 yards
    Color E - GoSadi Grape - 49 yards
    Color F - Working After Midnight - 49 yards

  • Needles: 4.5mm (US 7) 32" circular needle

  • Notions: Tapestry needle for grafting, stitch marker (optional), waste yarn for provisional cast-on

Note: cast-on stitch count and row counts below are based on a standard DK-weight gauge on 4.5mm needles (the same setup as the original Speckle Cowl, 102 stitches). Adjust your stitch count to your own gauge to hit the 28" circumference if your yarn or tension runs differently.

The Free Knitting Pattern

Cast On - Using a provisional cast-on, cast on 102 stitches (or your gauge-adjusted count for a 28" circumference). Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist your stitches.

Color A — Base

Knit in the round with Color A for 60 rows.

Color Change (Paint Drip Effect)

Switch to Color B. Alternate stitches around the entire round for 2 rows.

Color B

Knit in the round with Color B for 16 rows.

Color Change

Switch to Color C. Alternate stitches around for 2 rows.

Color C

Knit in the round with Color C for 16 rows.

Color Change

Switch to Color D. Alternate stitches around for 2 rows.

Color D

Knit in the round with Color D for 16 rows.

Color Change

Switch to Color E. Alternate stitches around for 2 rows.

Color E

Knit in the round with Color E for 16 rows.

Color Change

Switch to Color F. Alternate stitches around for 2 rows.

Color F

Knit in the round with Color F for 16 rows.

Color Change

Switch back to Color A. Alternate stitches around for 2 rows.

Color A — Final Section

Knit in the round with Color A for 20 rows (mirroring your base section), or continue until your piece measures 10" wide, whichever you prefer.

Finishing

Block your piece before grafting. Once blocked, graft the live stitches to your provisional cast-on edge using the Kitchener stitch to close the tube into a seamless loop.
