Working with Big Stitch Merino Wool or Woolen Tops or any roving is super fun. There are a few special tips to make the fiber more user friendly and one of those tips is in prepping the wool. I use the method of Hand Felting Your Big Stitch Merino Wool to prep it for projects before I even start the actual project.

Hand Felting Your Big Stitch Merino Wool is the process of running the Big Stitch Wool through your hands to “felt” together any excess fluff. You do this a couple of times to create a more user friendly fiber.

Hand Felting Your Big Stitch Merino Wool will make the fiber more “workable” without detracting from it’s generous fluff and softness.

When your Big Stitch Merino from Mama Knows Luxury arrives, you will be immersed in magical fluffy fiber.  I am sure, like me, you will want to dive in right away. But you must first prepare the fiber! Below is a step by step tutorial for how to prep the yarn.

You will need to Hand Felt the fiber so that it will stay in tact and be durable for you and work up with ease. You don't need any special tools and it takes mere minutes. I go over the wool by running it through my hands about 3-4 times in each direction. I have found this gives me the fiber result i want for my projects.

When I made my Big Stitch Merino Wool Basket, I actually used chunky merino that had been hand felted several times extra because I knew that it would be holding needles and supplies and I did not want anything to snag on fibers. That is one of my favorite things about this process, that you can make the wool as fluffy or not fluffy as you want!

I wanted a little more fluff when I made these Big Stitch Merino Wool Placemats but not too much that they would shed fluffy strands on the table when used. Again, I was able to determine the amount of fluff by using the Hand Felting Your Big Stitch Merino Wool process I show you below.
