Turtleneck Sweater Free Crochet Pattern

Ah the time of year when my hands cannot crochet fast enough. Gifts to be made and markets to prep for… so many things to make. This is one time of year I am especially happy for yarns like Caron Cakes where the heavy lifting and color work is done for me and all I need to do it stitch, stitch, stitch and stitch some more. The Sag Harbour Top is perfect for transitional weather as an added layer but also works up like adream. So grab your favorite cakes and make something fabulous.

Materials & Supply List:
Category #4 light worsted weight (Caron Cakes used for design)
960 (1080, 1205, 1300, 1420, 1560, 1700, 1800) yards
Crochet Hook Size I-9 / 5.5 mm
Tapestry needle to weave ends
Tape Measure
Fasteners or safety pins

Stitches Used / Abbreviations:
fsc – foundation single crochet
sc - single crochet
dc – double crochet
sl st – slip stitch
ch – chain loop

PATTERN SIZING:
This is an OVERSIZED PATTERN WITH LOOSE FIT positive ease
Pattern Sizes - Extra Small (Small, Medium, Large, 1X, 2X, 3X, 4X)
Finished Measurements - Bust: 40 (44, 48, 50.5, 54.5, 58.5, 62.5, 65.6)”

This pattern has been graded according to ASTM sizing standards and guidelines. But most women are not standard! Before beginning this project, take a close look at the schematic and make note of the measurements of the various parts of the finished item. You may wish to adjust some of these measurements to obtain a sweater that fits you and your unique body.

The model shown here is a teen in size Extra Small.

CONSTRUCTION NOTES: 

This pattern is made in one complete piece for the body. Neck and sleeves are crocheted directly onto the body.

GAUGE: 4” square = 12 sts x 13 pattern rows

PATTERN STITCH GUIDE:

This Pattern has a repeating stitch.:Alternating SC DC
Row 1: Ch 1 (acts as sc), dc in next fsc, *sc in next, dc in next* repeat * to * all the way across, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1 (acts as sc), dc in next sc, *sc in dc, dc in sc* repeat * to * all the way across, turn.

Repeat Row 2 for pattern.

In the Alternating SC DC stitch pattern, you may feel like you are “skipping” a stitch. You aren’t! It is the magic of this pattern.

BEGIN WITH MAIN BODY FABRIC:

Front:
Row 1: Fsc x 60 (66, 72, 76, 82, 88, 94, 98), turn.
Row 2: Work Row 1 of Alternating SC DC pattern stitch.
Rows 3-57 (57, 59, 59, 61, 61, 63, 63): Repeat Row 2 of pattern. 

Create Right Shoulder & Neck Opening:
Row 1: Work in Alternating SC DC pattern over 22 (24, 26, 28, 32, 34, 36, 38) sts, turn, leaving remaining 38 (42, 46, 48, 50, 54, 58, 60) sts unworked.
Rows 2-17: Work even in Alternating SC DC pattern, placing removable marker at the edge of Row 9 to indicate top of Shoulder. Break yarn.

Create Left Shoulder:
Skip center 16 (18, 20, 20, 18, 20, 22, 22) neck sts from last Body row, join yarn to next st. Work Rows 1-17 as for Right Shoulder. Do not fasten off or break yarn.

Create Back, Rejoin Shoulders:
Row 1: Work in Alternating SC DC pattern over 22 (24, 26, 28, 32, 34, 36, 38) Left Shoulder sts, fsc 16 (18, 20, 20, 18, 20, 22, 22), work in pattern over 22 (24, 26, 28, 32, 34, 36, 38) Right Shoulder sts. 60 (66, 72, 76, 82, 88, 94, 98) sts.
Rows 2-57 (57, 59, 59, 61, 61, 63, 63): Work even in Alternating SC DC pattern. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY & SLEEVES

BODY ASSEMBLY - WITH THE RIGHT SIDE FACING OUT:

Using stitch marker or fastener, pin the front to the back along lower 13.25 (12.75, 13, 12.5, 12.5, 12, 12.25, 12)”, leaving 7 (7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5, 9.75, 10)” unpinned each side below removable Shoulder marker.
Beginning at the bottom, sc sides together up to stitch marker. Do not break yarn.

At the Stitch Marker begin the sleeve for that side: 

SLEEVE
Round 1: Ch 1 (acts as first sc), sc around placing 1 sc in the side of
Round 2: Ch 1 (acts as first st), dc in next sc of previous row; *sc in next, dc in next *; repeat * to * all the way around, sl st to dc to complete round, turn.
Round 3: Ch 2 (acts as first st), *sc into dc, dc into sc*; repeat * to * all the way around ending in sc, sl st to top of ch 2 to complete round. Turn.
Rounds 4-20: Rep Rounds 2 & 3 alternating.

Fasten Off.

Repeat assembly & sleeve on other side.

NECK:

Join yarn at the center stitch at the back of the neck opening

Round 1: Ch 1 (acts as first sc), work 75 (79, 83, 83, 79, 83, 87, 87) more sc evenly around, working 11 sc along sides of front and back neck, and 1 sc into each skipped neck st, sl st to top of ch 1 to complete round. 76 (80, 84, 84, 80, 84, 88, 88) sc.

Round 2: Ch 1 (acts as first st), dc in next sc of previous row; *sc in next, dc in next *; repeat * to * all the way around, sl st to dc to complete round, turn.

Round 3: Ch 2 (acts as first st), *sc into dc, dc into sc*; repeat * to * all the way around ending in sc, sl st to top of ch 2 to complete round, turn.

Rounds 4-25: Rep Rounds 2 & 3 alternating.

Fasten Off.

Weave in all ends.
