Crochet Spike Stitch Tips & Tutorial for 2020 Moogly CAL Square
/I am super excited about this post because I get to finally reveal a project I have been keeping a secret for several months: This is my Moogly CAL 2020 Square Free Pattern! Woohoo! I have been such a fan of Tamara and her Moogly CAL every year. In case you don’t know what it is, the Moogly Yearly CAL is hosted by Moogly Blog consists of 25 “Squares” that are designed by different designers. Each month 2 square patterns are released and by the end of the year you have all the makings of the most beautiful and quite unique blanket. It is GENIUS! And super fun because you can layout your squares however you like and make your very own special blanket. I also love that by breaking it up along the year it is less overwhelming than just sitting down to whip up a blanket. Read on for tips and tricks for my Spike Stitch Moogly Square.
Why the Spiked Stitch you ask?
I had so much fun doing the Spiked Stitch Blog Hop that I knew I wanted to continue exploring ways to use that stitch in various designs and projects. I just needed to have the right project. Well, this Moogly Square was the perfect opportunity to do that by making it into a pseudo gradient style pattern. What I love most was the colors - the color palette for the Moogly 2020 CAL is a perfect set of light and dark purple with the pop of white. The official CAL uses grey also, but I stuck with the 3 colors.
CUSTOMIZATION TIP:
IF YOU WANT TO HAVE FUN AND CUSTOMIZE YOUR SQUARE, ADD THE 4th COLOR OF THE CAL FOR THE BOARDER… JUST BE SURE TO MAKE IT THE SAME MEASUREMENT BEFORE TRIM.
One thing I really wanted to create with this square pattern was a reversible fabric. This particular spiked stitch allows you to do that. You get both texture AND color pop on both sides of the square.
STITCH TIP:
When making this pattern be sure to insert your hook INTO the spike of the previous row and check that it is THROUGH the spike on the back side as well. That is what makes this a truly reversible pattern. See the illustration for exactly how to do that and get the perfect reversible fabric every time!
Like I said, this stitch pattern is one of the few stitch patterns that gives you both a pop of color and texture on BOTH sides! In fact, if you want to get adventurous beyond the square, you can use this pattern for scarves, cowls, baby blankets. The possibilities are endless to make reversible creations.
DESIGN TIP:
I used a 6 stitch repeat for this square but you can mix it up however you like. This could be fun in a variety of gradient colors or even as a rainbow! So many ideas to explore beyond the square. I say make the square and fall in love with this stitch pattern and then make all the things!
